Four MDC-T
activists from Epworth were yesterday evening arrested on allegations of
convening an unsanctioned meeting with residents. The four, Samson Ketuno,
Joseph Kumboyedza, Tarisai Musarudzwa and another one identified only as Dhlamini
were arrested following an anonymous letter of their alleged crime written to
Epworth Police Station by an undisclosed informant. Ketuno and Kumboyedza were
however released yesterday following intervention by the Zimbabwe Lawyers for
Human Rights lawyer, Kennedy Masiye. Masiye told The Zimbabwean that the two
other activists have not yet been charged and are waiting to be transferred to
the Harare Central Police Law and Order Section. “Right now we are at Epworth
Police Station and the police are saying that they were acting on an anonymous
letter which claimed that these men held a meeting with residents in Epworth
without notifying the police.“From what they are saying, it seems they want to
charge them under the Public Order and Security Act,” said Masiye. Masiye
however expressed serious reservations over the authenticity of the anonymous
letter that led to the arrest of his clients saying there could be a sinister
motive behind. “It is quite shocking how the police can rely on that
information because it seems the letter was written by someone bent on getting
these guys arrested only and nothing else,” said Masiye.
The police
could not be reached for comment on Friday morning.
